Let me set the scene — Wednesday night, regular group, minus a few. Down to three. Which is the minimum for a good game of Vindication, but the perfect number to throw something new at people who can't say no because there aren't enough of them to outvote me.

So I put Chronicles on the table.

Here's what I love about Chronicles as an expansion mode: it doesn't ask you to play a different game. It asks you to play more of the game you're already playing — and then rewards you for it. Yes, there's new stuff on the table. Yes, there's a quick rules explanation. But the mechanical ask is light because most of what Chronicles wants from you is what you'd be doing anyway. The choose-your-own-adventure beats could have been window dressing — flavor text you skim past on your way to the next action. They're not. People are leaning in, asking "wait, what are my options again?" — because answering the way you want to answer gets you honor and possibly a legendary ability. That's not fluff. That's design doing its job.

Some expansion modes reward you for playing a different Vindication. Chronicles just feels like Vindication with the volume turned up. At least that's the take from my table.

The game itself? Genuinely thought Allen had it. He was one action away from closing it out by the end — and honestly, I would've been fine with that. I kind of hope I lose next time. If I'm getting beaten, it means the people I keep dragging back to this game are finally investing in it the way I have. That's the real win.
But the best moment of the night — the one that's going to echo through every future session — was Lydon. Lydon, the shortest member of the group, looks down at his randomly selected character and realizes fate has handed him the hobbit.

"Am I playing a fucking hobbit?"

Hilarity ensued. And in a way, Lydon won the night — even from last place.
